In Poland. Germany and the Czech Republic they recorded several dozen hours of splendid studio material of which only a tiny part appeared on records in the ’70s. But it was the stage where they felt at home. They felt perfectly comfortable in great Roskilde-type festivals, in small clubs in Germany as well as in the prestigious Congress Hall in Warsaw – and you can make your own judgement on that now.

After the well-received by the fans and journalists CD “Jazz nad Odrą 1975”, the time has come to document the final months of the activities of the original incarnation of SBB. In April 1980 the musicians played a number of concerts in Poland where fresh, improvised forms predominated, powered by brilliant dialogues and guitar duels between Apostolis Antymos and Sławomir Piwowar. On the one hand, the SBB still nurtured their progressive fascinations present in the suite “Going Away” or the premiere track “Moja ziemio wyśniona”, yet, on the other hand, they sounded like a true jam band, capable of toying with their own music in a creative, surprising and fatigue-free manner for… as long as two and a half hours!

The material has been remastered from the original tapes from Józef Skrzek’s archive.

W Polsce, Niemczech i Czechach nagrali kilkadziesiąt godzin doskonałego materiału studyjnego, z którego tylko nikła część ukazała się w latach 70. na płytach. Ale ich żywiołem była przede wszystkim scena. Doskonale czuli się na wielkich festiwalach typu Roskilde, w kameralnych klubach w Niemczech, ale i w prestiżowej Sali Kongresowej w Warszawie – o czym można się będzie teraz przekonać samemu.

Po doskonale przyjętym przez fanów i dziennikarzy albumie „Jazz nad Odrą 1975” przyszedł czas na dokumentację ostatnich miesięcy działalności oryginalnego wcielenia SBB. W kwietniu 1980 roku muzycy zagrali w Polsce szereg koncertów, na których królowały świeże, improwizowane formy napędzane błyskotliwymi dialogami i pojedynkami gitar Apostolisa Antymosa i Sławomira Piwowara. Z jednej strony SBB pielęgnowało wciąż swoje progresywne fascynacje, prezentując suitę „Going Away” czy premierowy utwór „Moja ziemio wyśniona”, ale z drugiej brzmiało często jak rasowy, amerykański jamband, który w kreatywny, zaskakujący i nienużący sposób potrafi się bawić własną muzyką przez… dwie i pół godziny!

Materiał zremasterowano z oryginalnych taśm z archiwum Józefa Skrzeka.

The new live EP by Ryan W. Stevenson's project reminded me, that this debut album must have been gone down the wishlist... If instrumental Canterbury stuff is your thing, this should be a no-brainer. Firmly rooted in the past (late 60s, 70s), nevertheless with a fresh sound. Guests incude The Tangent's Andy Tillison and Soft Machine's Theo Travis. Carsten Pieper
